Do ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity recommend the same businesses? (2026)

Mostly not. In our Oct 12, 2026 test only 11% to 15% of the businesses named in a city were named by more than one assistant. Why you check each one.

No, mostly not. In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, only 11% to 15% of the businesses named in a city were named there by more than one of ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity when they were asked the same buyer questions. Being named by one assistant doesn’t show you’ll be named by the others, so check each one separately.

We’re Answersky (answersky.com), and the figures here come from our own test, not from anyone else’s data. In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions a buyer asks when hiring a business in three US cities, and counted who was named. Below is what the lists looked like, what we can and can’t conclude, and what to do with it.

What did we ask, and did the assistants name businesses?

In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, we asked each assistant six questions in each city: three “who should I hire” questions and three “how do I choose” questions. Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test produced 162 answers across accounting firms, law firms and dental practices, and ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity named a specific business in all 81 of the “who should I hire” answers. The assistants were told to recommend businesses by name where relevant, which likely raises how often they name anyone.

So in this test, asking who to hire got names every time. The open question is whether the three assistants named the same ones.

How much did their lists overlap?

Very little. We counted businesses per city, and checked how many of them more than one assistant named in that city. In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, the 11% to 15% range covers every industry in the study. Here are the two we have full pages for.

  • Accounting firms: In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, 190 firms were named across the three cities, 20 of them (11%) were named by more than one assistant in the same city, and 3 were named by all three.
  • Law firms: In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, 264 firms were named across the three cities, 37 of them (14%) were named by more than one assistant in the same city, and 5 were named by all three.

Every other firm was named by one assistant only. This wasn’t because the answers were short. In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, the answers that named firms listed a median of 8 accounting firms and 9 law firms. Each assistant gave a long list and the lists mostly didn’t match. Our accounting firms and law firms pages have the full counts.

Firms named by more than one of ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in the same city. Answersky's Oct 12, 2026 test, counted per city, so a firm named in two cities counts twice. A second AI model listed the names and we checked a sample by hand.

Did each assistant behave the same way?

Not quite, and that is a second reason to check each one. Some named firms in fewer answers than others.

Answers that named at least one specific firm, out of 18 per assistant and industry. Answersky's Oct 12, 2026 test, both question types together.

In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, ChatGPT named an accounting firm in 12 of 18 answers, Gemini in 17 of 18 and Perplexity in 15 of 18. The three didn’t just pick different names. They also differed in how often they named anyone at all. In Answersky’s Oct 12, 2026 test, the gap was smaller for law firms: ChatGPT named a firm in 18 of 18 answers, Gemini in 18 of 18 and Perplexity in 15 of 18.

Is the difference between assistants, or just run-to-run change?

We can’t fully separate the two, and it would be wrong to claim the whole gap is “assistants disagree”. Our Oct 12 study was one run: each question was asked once of each assistant. So it can’t show how much of the mismatch comes from the assistants differing and how much comes from any assistant giving a different list each time it is asked. How much a single assistant’s answers move over time is its own question; how much AI answers change week to week looks at it.

What this test does show is that the three lists seldom matched. That is a reason to check each assistant yourself, and to ask more than once.

What does it mean if one assistant names my business?

It means that assistant named you, in that answer, on that day. It doesn’t tell you what the other two will do.

For all our other figures, with their dates, see AI visibility statistics.

What are the limits of this test?

  • It was one run on Oct 12, 2026. Answers change from run to run, so these are samples, not rankings.
  • It used the assistants’ APIs with web search on, and each question named the city. The consumer apps can answer differently.
  • The assistants were prompted to recommend businesses by name where relevant. Asked in another way, they might name fewer, or different, businesses.
  • A second AI model listed the businesses in each answer and we checked a sample by hand. A spelling variant could split one firm in two, which would make the overlap look smaller than it is.
  • Businesses are counted per city.
  • We don’t publish the businesses that were named. The full method is on the study page.

Nothing here is a promise about what any assistant will say about you. It is a dated count, and it will change.

How do I find out which assistants name me?

Ask each assistant the questions your buyers ask, write down the names, and repeat on another day. The free Quick Scan does a version of that for you on ChatGPT and Perplexity. You can check Gemini separately by hand, the same way.
